Kirsten Dunst Movies: 'All Good Things'Kirsten Dunst Movies: 'All Good Things': Andrew Jarecki’s first film, “Capturing the Friedmans,” was a documentary about a pedophilia case that had more familial dysfunction, true crime mystery and breakneck plot twists than most dramatic features.  So perhaps it’s not surprise that for his fictional debut he’s chosen a crime story about a creepy family, shifting truths and what we might call ‘unknown unknowns.’

“All Good Things” is a reworking of some details of the life of Robert Durst, a New York real estate heir with a vanished wife and two murdered friends and a Teflon-like ability to keep himself from get any serious crimes pinned to him.  Here, refashioned as David Marks, he’s played by Ryan Gosling as a manic depressive pothead with a tyrannical dad (Frank Langella) and a wife (Kirsten Dunst) who starts by loving him and then drifts as far away as she can before disappearing.

It’s a heavy, moody film, mimicking in its form something of the mental state of its central character, which is a nifty trick.  But the quality of the craft doesn’t draw you in, nor does Gosling’s aloof and inward performance as a sociopathic creep with little charm.  The murky, claustrophobic atmosphere has moments of flash, but can’t escape the wish that Jarecki had been able to do a “Friedmans”-style nonfiction film on this strange and alienating subject.
